Will Your Furniture Fit?

Furniture Fit Guide

There's nothing more exciting than finding the perfect piece of furniture for your home. And there's nothing more stressful than the moment the delivery truck arrives and you ask yourself: "Will it actually fit through the door?"

We've develepod our smart Furniture Fit Calculator to eliminate that stress completely. This powerful tool is designed to give you instant peace of mind. Just take a few simple measurements, enter them into the fields above, and our calculator will instantly tell you if your new furniture will fit through your doorways, stairways, and elevators. By taking a few simple measurements now, you can ensure a smooth, hassle-free delivery day and start enjoying your new furniture the moment it arrives. This helps prevent failed deliveries, damage, and unnecessary returns.

1. Key Furniture Dimensions

You’ll need to know the Width (W)Height (H), and Depth (D) of the item:

  • Width: Left to right when facing the front of the item
  • Height: Floor to top of the tallest point (including backrests or cushions)
  • Depth: Front to back

Tip: Packaging may add 2–4 inches depending on the item.

2. Doorway Fit

Check if your furniture will pass through your front door:

  • Door Width: From the inner edge of the doorframe to the opposite side
  • Door Height: From floor to top frame (ignore molding)

Additional Clearances:

  • Side Wall Distance: Distance from the hinge side of the door to the nearest wall. Useful for rotating the furniture.
  • Front Wall Distance: The space in front of the door for maneuvering larger items.

Recommended: Add 1–1.5" on each side to account for packaging and safe handling.

3. Staircase Fit

If your delivery includes stairs, be sure to check:

  • Stair Width
  • Ceiling Height above stairs
  • Number of Turns (landings)
  • Platform Depth (landing area)
  • Step Rise & Tread Depth
  • Total Number of Steps

If landings are smaller than the item's depth, it may not turn properly.

4. Elevator Fit

Check both the elevator door and the interior cabin:

  • Door Width & Height
  • Interior Width, Depth, and Height
  • Diagonal Clearance (bottom front to upper back corner)

Be sure there's space for both the item and the delivery person inside.

5. Other Obstacles to Watch For

  • Hallways
  • Interior doors
  • Tight corners
  • Low ceilings or hanging fixtures
  • Railings, gates, porches, or narrow entryways

6. Preparing the Delivery Path

  • Clear rugs, furniture, and decorations from the path
  • Protect delicate walls or banisters with blankets
  • Reserve elevators or parking in advance
  • Ensure outdoor entry areas are accessible

Pro Tip: Always measure before you order—not after the truck arrives!

Important Disclaimer: Please Read Carefully

This online furniture fit calculator is designed to assist you in estimating whether your furniture can pass through a doorway, staircase, or elevator. However, please note that the results are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate.

Several factors can lead to inaccurate results, including:

  • Measurement inaccuracies: Even small errors in your input dimensions—either of the furniture or the entryway—can significantly affect the result. Please measure carefully and double-check your inputs.
  • Complex furniture shapes: The calculator assumes a box-like (rectangular prism) shape. Curved edges, protruding arms, angled legs, or irregular forms may behave differently in real situations.
  • Rotation or tilt angles: Actual moving conditions, such as how much a piece can be tilted or rotated, can’t be fully simulated by this tool.
  • Fixed components: Some furniture parts (like legs, headboards, or armrests) may not be removable, which can affect real-world fit.
  • Architectural details: Door frames, thresholds, or baseboards may reduce the effective clearance and are not considered in the calculation.

Therefore, the final responsibility lies with you, the user. This tool serves as a guidance aid only and cannot be held liable for any decisions made regarding delivery, purchase, or movement of furniture based on its output. We highly recommend verifying all measurements yourself or with the help of a professional. In the event that an item does not fit during delivery, our standard Delivery and Return Policies will apply. This may include restocking fees or return shipping costs, as outlined in our policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How accurate do my measurements need to be?

A: Very accurate! Our calculator is a powerful guide, but its results are only as good as the numbers you provide. Even a small error of an inch can make a difference. We strongly recommend measuring each space twice and paying close attention to the narrowest points of your doorways and hallways.

Q: Does the calculator work for furniture with curved arms or irregular shapes?

A: The calculator provides the most accurate results for box-shaped items. For furniture with significant curves, large rolled arms, or angled legs, the tool serves as a great starting estimate. For these pieces, always use the single widest or deepest point as your measurement to be safe.

Q: What are some common obstacles people forget to measure?

A: It’s easy to focus only on the main door and forget the rest of the path. Always look out for low-hanging light fixtures, staircase banisters, angled ceilings in a stairwell, and interior door frames that might be narrower than your main entrance. Walking and measuring the entire delivery path is key.

Q: What if the calculator says it fits, but the delivery team can't get it in?

A: This is rare, but can happen due to unforeseen obstacles (like a sharp, un-measurable turn). While this tool is a powerful aid designed to prevent this, the final responsibility for ensuring the fit rests with you, the customer. In the unfortunate event an item doesn't fit, our standard Return Policy would apply.
